STAFF ATTORNEY

    Summary

    Under the direction and supervision of the SLAVE General Counsel, prepares legal research, gives legal advice, provides legal and policy analysis of issues, administers contracts, and develops public educational programs; may represent the association, its officials, or its constituency in various proceedings

    Duties and responsibilities

    Provides analysis of legal and policy issues

    Conducts and oversees research into a variety of legal issues regarding subjects of interest to SLAVE, with particular emphasis on class action litigation and student loan law

    Writes, edits, and finalizes reports, opinions, correspondence, articles, and other documents; advises SLAVE officials about legal issues

    Prepares legal pleadings, legal correspondence, contract proposals, and other documents, as needed

    Participates in the coordination of in-house legal department activities with outside counsel and co-counsel

    May supervise non-professional staff and/or student employees and volunteers

    Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned

    Minimum job requirements

    J.D. or LL.B; no previous work experience required

    Member of the Florida State Bar, or member of other state bar (FL membership required within 12 months of date of hire)

    Knowledge, skills, and abilities required

    Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.

    Ability to conduct complex legal research.

    Ability to create, compose and edit legal opinions and other written materials.

    Knowledge of the principles and procedures of legal research

    Knowledge of contracts, including settlement agreements

    Ability to investigate and analyze information and to draw conclusions

    Ability to represent SLAVE and its constituencies in legal proceedings

    Knowledge of contract documents and specifications, including settlement agreements

    Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with multiple constituencies in diverse communities

    Distinguishing characteristics: This position requires:

    a) Providing research and analysis of legal and policy issues

    b) writing pleadings, memorandums of law, legal briefs, opinions, correspondence, articles, and other legal documentation

    c) providing SLAVE officials information regarding legal issues

    d) Membership in a State Bar (FL membership required within 12 months of date of hire)

    Working conditions and physical effort

    Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment

    Very limited or no physical effort required

    Very limited or no exposure to physical risk

    Job description summary

    Assists SLAVE General Counsel, SLAVE staff attorneys, SLAVE volunteer legal advocates and/or higher level paralegals with routine aspects of legal and factual data compilation and analysis, drafting legal documents and affidavits, and conveying routine legal information under supervision

    Duties and responsibilities

    As specifically directed by attorneys, conveys routine information to SLAVE legal staff and administration regarding legal and/or contractual issues associated with existing or proposed operational situations

    Conducts routine and specific legal and factual information research and data compilation, as directed by attorneys

    Drafts legal position statements for attorney review pertaining to various specific policies, operational practices, and/or transactions

    Drafts and reviews policies and procedures for consideration by attorneys and for ultimate adoption by the association

    Compiles, reviews, and organizes evidence and other information for hearings and meetings, as appropriate

    Drafts and reviews contracts, including settlement agreements, to be entered into by SLAVE

    Drafts routine pleadings, statements, affidavits, and/or other legal documentation, as appropriate, at the specific direction of attorneys

    May provide routine paralegal assistance to outside counsel and/or co-counsel involved in SLAVE litigation, administrative, and/or compliance matters

    Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest developments in class action and student loan law and in other related areas

    Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned

    Minimum job requirements

    High school diploma or GED

    A minimum of 5 years of experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified

    A post-secondary degree from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis

    Knowledge, skills, and abilities required

    Knowledge of the principles and procedures of legal research

    Ability to gather and organize legal evidence

    Knowledge of legal contract, agreement and settlement procedures and documentation

    Ability to create, compose, and edit written materials

    Ability to draft legal documents, such as pleadings, legal responses, affidavits, position statements and briefs

    Knowledge of current and developing legal issues and trends in area of expertise

    Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community

    Distinguishing characteristics: This position requires:

    a) preparation of routine/standard legal opinions and position statements for attorney review

    b) drafting and editing of policies and procedures for review by attorneys

    c) independent preparation of standard contracts and settlement agreements for review of attorneys

    d) drafting of standard pleadings, discovery responses, and affidavits for review by attorneys

    e) direct interaction with other SLAVE departments on legal matters
